ATMs

Most banks operate ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines, also known as cash points or service tills) that accept a wide range of cards. Most ATMs, although linked to a specific bank, are part of a central network so you can use any bank card in them. They usually display a range of symbols indicating which networks they are linked to (such as Cirrus and Visa Electron).

You will probably pay a minimal charge if you use an ATM that does not belong to your bank for cash withdrawals and balance enquiries (usually only a dirham or two). Most shopping centres and large supermarkets have at least one ATM, some petrol stations have one in the forecourt or inside the 24 hour shop, and a few hotels have one in their lobby.

A recent spate of ATM fraud has affected the UAE; contact your bank immediately if you believe you have been the victim of fraud. Safeguard your pin, be alert to suspicious devices on the machines (but do not remove them – tell the bank at once), and if the machine swallows your card contact your bank immediately. For international cards, the exchange rates used in the transaction are normally competitive and the process is faster and much less hassle than traditional travellers’ cheques.
